How To Play

The game is played in third-person perspective. Throughout the single-player mode, players control former NYPD Detective Max Payne. nine years after the events of the second game, Max finds work as a private security contractor in São Paulo, Brazil, instead becoming entangled in a quest filled with death and betrayal. An online multiplayer mode is included in the game, allowing up to 16 players to participate in two-player co-op in multiple single-player settings to recreate and compete in the game.

A new feature in the series is the cover system, which allows players to gain a tactical advantage and avoid damage from enemies. In order to progress through the linear story, players need to fight against enemies in various levels. The game features interactive transitions that seamlessly transition into ongoing gameplay; there are no loading screens during gameplay or transitions.

In combat, the auto-targeting and cover systems can be used as an aid against enemies. If the player takes damage, painkillers can be used to restore health. Players use melee attacks, firearms, and explosives to fight enemies. Bullet time is available during action sequences; use this feature to see in detail every bullet that hits an enemy. The game also introduces the "Last Stand" mechanic, which gives the player a grace period when life is completely depleted, allowing the player to kill the last enemy to harm them in order to stay alive as long as the player has at least one recovery item. When this feature is used, it uses up all of the player's remaining "bullet time". Another new feature in the series is the ability to dive to avoid enemies by using the shoot to avoid mechanic, which allows players to shoot at any angle while remaining grounded.

Unlike previous games in the series, the player character can only hold three weapons at a time. There are two pistol slots and one two-handed weapon slot. If the player chooses to equip two pistols at once, they must discard their two-handed weapon. Otherwise, the player character will have both hands under his arms.
