Hill Climb Racing is about collecting coins by driving as far as possible through progressively difficult racing stages, taking advantage of unrealistic physics and using only two simple controls: the gas and brake pedals. While in mid-air, depressing these pedals causes the vehicle to rotate, allowing the player to control the angle of landing. Fuel is replenished by picking up gas cans or batteries along the way. Players can perform stunts, such as driving the vehicle into the air for long periods of time or flipping it over to earn more coins, which can be used to upgrade or unlock new stages and vehicles (including monster trucks, buggies, tanks, and Santa's sleigh) at the end of the race. Ending the game is contingent on running out of fuel in your vehicle or hitting the driving avatar in the head.
